Our Journey
Since 2017, our founder independently rescued over 500 dogs from the streets of Houston and, beginning in 2023, expanded efforts to include Trap-Neuter-Return for community cats, successfully TNR'ing more than 700 cats while fostering and placing over 200 cats into permanent homes through rescue partnerships.
Recognizing the growing scale of the street animal crisis and the need for more organized, sustainable impact, she established The Kindness Crew as a nonprofit to expand funding opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and reach more animals in need.
By combining direct intervention with collaborative rescue pipelines, we work to stop the cycle of suffering at its source and create lasting impact where it's needed most.

Founder and Chief Executive
Phenil Shah
The Kindness Crew was founded by Phenil Shah, whose work in Houston began long before the organization was formally established. As a residential builder and developer, Phenil initially focused on constructing homes in underserved neighborhoods undergoing revitalization. Working closely within these communities exposed her to the severe challenges facing street animals - including abandonment, neglect, and cruelty cases that were far more common in areas lacking resources and support.

While her professional work has since expanded into building custom homes across the city, her commitment to these communities has remained unchanged. Phenil continues to spend four to five days each week returning to these neighborhoods for community outreach, street feeding, rescue coordination, and direct intervention for animals in need.

After years of independently rescuing animals - including hundreds of dogs and community cats - she recognized the growing scale of the crisis and established The Kindness Crew to create a more organized, sustainable approach to rescue, Trap-Neuter-Return, and partnership-driven adoption efforts across Houston.
Founder's Personal Statement - "WHY I DO THIS"
I began rescuing animals not because I planned to start a nonprofit, but because I kept encountering situations where no one else was stepping in. While working in underserved Houston neighborhoods as a homebuilder, I repeatedly saw animals abandoned, injured, or simply struggling to survive, and I couldn't walk past that need. What started as helping one animal at a time grew into years of daily rescue work, community outreach, and partnerships that saved hundreds of dogs and cats.

Forming The Kindness Crew was a natural next step — a way to turn individual effort into lasting, organized impact, expand resources, and ensure that more animals receive the care, protection, and second chances they deserve
How We Make an Impact
Providing vital services to stop the cycle of suffering for Houston's street animals.
Trap-Neuter-Return
Consistent Trap-Neuter-Return is important because it is the only humane, effective way to manage community cat populations and reduce future suffering.
Street Feeding
Daily routes covering underserved Houston neighborhoods to ensure animals don't go hungry while waiting for rescue bridge placement.
Rescue Bridge
We act as the critical link between the street and permanent homes by partnering with local adoption agencies across Houston.
